It can be daunting when you first make the switch to Vegan, but the good news is there is an abundance of resources out there to help you. One of the most accessible and personal favourites is YouTube.
Gone are the days of recipe books, there are so many amazing vloggers creating anything, everything and sharing for free so that you don’t need to worry about being stuck for ideas.
Here I have consolidated my ten most regularly visited (at the moment — it changes all the time) with my favourite comforting recipe from each, which are all tried, tested and triumphant!
If you want more ideas then head on over to their channels where you can see all of their content.
I hope this can go some way to helping make your journey a little easier!
1. Chef Jana – French Onion Soup
Chef Jana has a bunch of great ideas and we regularly head over to her page for inspiration. What’s nice about Jana is her recipes are often quite unique. One of our favourites (we have a few) is her French Onion soup which I swear is a legitimate replacement for the real thing and hearty and warming now we are heading into the colder months.
2. Rainbow Plant Life — Buffalo Chickpea Quesadillas
Worth watching just for her squeals of horror when she drops her nooch which is ‘so valuable’ and impromptu dancing which features in most of her videos. These quesadillas are so delicious and our non-vegan friends were more than happy to stuff these into their faces.
3. Sarah’s Vegan Kitchen — Corned Beef Seitan and Reuben Sandwich
I had to put them both in because the corned beef is epic, but then the Reuben is even epic-er; ok, I realise that is not a real word, but I promise you this is well worth the effort, it is so tasty and the sandwich is one of the staples that we feed to our meat-eating friends, always successfully!
4. Hot For Food — Crab Cakes (from artichokes)
Not only are her crabcakes outstanding, but I randomly bumped into Lauren in Bali, she is super lovely and I was compelled to tell her how amazing her crabcakes are, which was welcomed with a big hug. (obviously before COVID-19) I would suggest batch making them so you can keep some in the freezer.
5. Good Eatings — Carrot and Lentil Curry
She cooks this on Friday which is about 9:24 into the video. However, the rest of the ideas are great too so I suggest you just watch the whole thing. This channel also gets a special mention as everything is just so beautifully shot!
6. Avante — Garde Vegan’s Sticky BBQ Ribs
As this is a reasonably labour-intensive recipe, I would suggest making extra so you can freeze it, it is well worth it. We had supplies in there for months and you can throw it into salads, wraps, sandwiches and it’s a delicious substitute!
7. Bosh – Chilli Cheese Fries
I first encountered this phenomenon when I was off sick, newly vegan, trawling through YouTube looking for meal inspiration. It was the first thing I cooked once I was feeling well enough and it did not disappoint! Healthy? NO! Delicious? YES!
8. Mary’s Test Kitchen — Korean Garlic Bread
I mean does it even need any introduction? Just look at it, we were salivating as soon as we saw the thumbnail. It’s a treat, everyone is allowed treats! Make it, it’s amazing!
9. Will Yeung’s — Veggie Chow Mein
Simple, delicious and easy. Much better for you than anything you’ll get from a takeaway, simple enough for you to recreate in minutes, yummy enough to share with all your friends (if you want to).
10. Sauce Stache’s — Not Chicken
Part science, part cooking, his determination to create realistic mock meats is equally fascinating and awe-inspiring. He has a whole series of ‘Not Chicken’ videos, with varying degrees of success. This one is a definite winner. Looks like it, tastes like it and you can make it at home by yourself. Also worth noting that this texture is very similar to a Tuna steak, so if you were to adjust your flavourings slightly I think you could also replicate Tuna with this recipe!
